What are you planning to do after graduation? It is important to think about potential career paths, but also remember that your major is not the sole determining factor of what career you can pursue. The Careers Action Guides will help you increase your understanding of different career fields, learn about occupational titles and job functions, gain confidence in setting up informational interviews, and think about how your major and career are connected.

C1-Discover Career Services

Purpose

The purpose of this Action Guide is to learn more about the resources available to you through Career Services on campus

Description

Many students hear the words "career center" and think only of finding a job after graduation. However, Career Services at the U of M offers so much more to students! There are seven undergraduate career centers (see below) that offer a wide range of services to students from each college.

C2- Explore Careers on GoldPASS

Purpose

The purpose of this guide is to learn how to utilize the GoldPASS system to aid you in exploring different career opportunities. 

Description

GoldPASS is the U of M listings site created just for U of M students and alumni. On it you can find thousands of listings for jobs, internships, and volunteer positions. You can upload resumes for employers to access, sign up for on-campus recruiting opportunities, and see upcoming career fairs and events through your college.

C3-Informational Interview

Purpose

The purpose of this exercise is to help you set-up and conduct an informational interview to learn more about a specific career field. This guide will then assist you in applying what you learn to help clarify your academic and career path.

An informational interview is a great way to talk directly with an experienced professional and gather information about an occupation of interest. These meetings are more beneficial than simply reading about an occupational area and provide the following benefits:

C4-Explore Career Websites

Purpose:

The purpose of this worksheet is to utilize career websites to gather information about occupations of interest and apply that understanding to clarifying your current status on your major.

Description:

There are many career databases available which allow you to gather information on occupations such as the nature of the work, skills used, average salary, and job outlook. Both O*NET and ISEEK allow you to explore occupations based on your interests and skills.

C5-What Can I Do With a Major In?

Purpose

The Purpose of this worksheet is to gather career information associated with your majors of interest.

Description

This Action Guide will help you start to examine potential career opportunities related to majors offered through the University of Minnesota. Each undergraduate college has gathered information on their majors including sample job titles, alumni stories, skills gained, and related professional associations, to provide you with more information to answer the question, "What can I do with a major in....?".

C6-LinkedIn

Purpose

The purpose of this worksheet is to learn about career possibilities by utilizing LinkedIn.

Description

LinkedIn is a social networking website for people in professional occupations. It is the world's largest professional network with millions of members, and it can help you learn about careers, companies, and organizations by tapping into the knowledge of your network.
